Meeting friends of friends...
I went out for pizza and beer with some friends today... One that
usually goes to movies with me and another that I didn't see
since I came back home and some friends of them. It's kind of funny
trying to talk to people that don't know anything about what you worked
with (like you cannot start explaining what is all about), don't read
any books of any authors you read, are not Internet addicts, are not
gamers and don't really travel much... You try hard but whatever you
say makes you feel like you are trying to show yourself... It was fun..
but I bet some of the people that didn't know me there totally hate me
by now... It's not easy being geek in this damn tropical country....

In those situations I usually start talking about complete nonsense that comes to my mind, make fun of myself and try to make them laugh.
Don't know whether it works, though, cause I'm socially challengened.
But i agree with you. It's even worse, if you are sitting in a group and as a geek you'll automatically cluster to the only other geekish person on the table and get carried away a little talking about stuff, while not noticing that everyone else on the table is awfully bored.
Yeah, I suck at small talk with strangers too, unless I know about something that we have in common.
It's something I've learned to live with.
